We started From the Pond by making printable games for small group mathematics programs, primarily for the number strand. We have continued to make 'print and play' games to add to our collection and have also started to revise and update our originals.
We believe in having a good collection of games that teach similar content - this will help to motivate and engage your students. Early number skills require multiple lessons and activities to consolidate understanding. With a variety of fun, themed games, students will not even notice that they are learning!
We focus on early number awareness - subitizing, numeral identification, forwards and backwards number sequences, counting, addition and subtraction. Other areas are also covered in our games and resources.
Emergent Level
Students at the emergent level of number are working on being able to:
- count collections of objects
- identify numerals
- label a collection of objects with a numeral
Students working at the emergent level cannot count items that are visible They do not know the number words and cannot coordinate number words with items (1:1).
Students working at the emergent level cannot count items that are visible They do not know the number words and cannot coordinate number words with items (1:1).
Perceptual Level
Students at the perceptual level of number are working on being able to:
- add 2 collections of objects to model addition
- count without having to see/touch objects
- subitize to ten (recognize standard patterns for numbers without having to count each item)
- say forward and backward number word sequences correctly
Figurative Level
Students at the figurative level of number are working on being able to:
- use 'counting-on' for 'counting down' from one collection to solve addition/subtraction
- develop knowledge of base ten
-form equal groups and finding their total
Counting-on Counting-back Level
Students at this level are working on being able to
- apply a variety of arithmetic strategies to solve problems
- form equal groups and find the total by using skip counting strategies
Facile Level
Students at this level are working on being able to
- use part/whole knowledge to 10 and 20 when combining and portioning
- use 5 as a sub-base to add and subtract
- form equal groups and find the total without the items being present (skip counting, repeated addition, known facts)
- count by tens from mid-decade to solve problems
